Cancun Airport Shatters Records: Find Out How It Became Mexico’s Top Hub!
Cancun International Airport has established itself as the leader in international traffic among Mexican airports, handling 3.93 million passengers between January and April 2024.
This marks a 6.2% increase from the same period in 2023. The airport’s performance surpasses that of Mexico City International Airport (AICM), which saw 1.43 million international passengers, and Puerto Vallarta, which recorded 886,873 passengers, an 8.8% increase from the previous year.
According to the Secretary of Tourism of Mexico, Miguel Torruco, the overall arrival of international tourists via air to Mexico in the first four months of 2024 reached 8.47 million, representing a 5.9% increase from the same period in 2023. This figure also exceeds the pre-pandemic levels of 2019 by 21.2%.
The majority of international tourists arriving in Mexico during this period came from the United States, Canada, and Colombia.
The United States led the way with 5.09 million tourists, a 7.5% increase from 2023 and a 39.7% rise compared to 2019. Canadian tourists totaled 1.41 million, reflecting a 12.3% increase from the previous year and a 12.2% increase from 2019. Colombian tourists accounted for 207,430 arrivals, marking a 24.3% increase from 2019.
Cancun’s continued success as a top destination is driven by its appeal as a tourist hotspot, offering beautiful beaches, vibrant nightlife, and a rich cultural heritage.
The airport’s infrastructure and efficient handling of large volumes of passengers have also contributed to its dominance in international traffic.
However, the opening of the new airport in Tulum and operational adjustments by airlines such as Viva Aerobus and Volaris, which have grounded some of their Airbus 320 and 321neo fleets for engine inspections, have impacted passenger numbers on some routes.
Despite these challenges, Cancun Airport remains unrivaled in its international traffic, solidifying its status as a crucial gateway for tourists entering Mexico.
