Massive Sargassum Cleanup Underway: 100 Clean & Pristine Mexican Beaches
The government of Quintana Roo has initiated an extensive cleanup campaign to remove sargassum from 100 beaches across eight municipalities in the Mexican Caribbean.
The municipalities involved are Tulum, Puerto Morelos, Solidaridad, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Benito Juárez, Othón P. Blanco, and Lázaro Cárdenas. Covering a total area of 654,611.76 square meters, this initiative is expected to run until December 15, 2024.
The cleanup efforts, contracted to Red Recolector S.A. de C.V., include cleaning, sweeping, removing, and transporting the seaweed to designated sites. Each municipality has specific beaches targeted for these efforts.
In Tulum, for instance, key beaches like Maya, Mezzanine, and Pescadores are on the list. Similarly, Puerto Morelos’ cleanup will cover beaches such as Amar Inn Ojo de Agua and Arrecifes Kenwall.
This proactive approach aims to keep the region’s beaches pristine, ensuring a better experience for both locals and tourists. The ongoing battle against sargassum is crucial for maintaining the ecological balance and attractiveness of these popular tourist destinations.
