Cancun to Host 12th Edition of Festival of the Oceans in June

The 12th edition of the Festival of the Oceans is set to take place in Cancun, Quintana Roo, from June 8 to June 16, 2024. This annual event aims to promote environmental education and the conservation of marine ecosystems.

Miguel Canseco, the event’s general coordinator, highlighted the festival’s comprehensive program during a recent press conference.

The festival kicks off on June 8, coinciding with World Oceans Day, with a beach cleanup and recreational activities at Playa Delfines.

Following this, a series of events including exhibitions, contests, and discussions will take place. Notable events include an exhibition at Terminal 4 of Cancun International Airport on June 11 and a women-centric conversation named “Mujer es A-Mar” on June 13.

The festival will also feature a drawing competition for children and a photography contest, with growing participation from local and international communities.

This year, the drawing competition received 985 entries, nearly tripling last year’s 387. The festival is also expanding internationally, with collaborations from institutions in Portugal, Hawaii, Bermuda, and the Bahamas.

Key themes of this year’s festival are climate change, the invasion of exotic species such as the lionfish, ocean plastic pollution, overfishing, and the loss of biodiversity, with a special focus on the endangered vaquita marina.

The festival will conclude on June 16 with a grand closing ceremony featuring a concert by the Symphony Orchestra and Choir of the University of the Caribbean at the Teatro Álamos Cancun. The event promises to be a celebration of community efforts toward ocean conservation and environmental stewardship.
